Hope everyone had a great day today. Little Nicholas actually got well enough to open his presents and play some. We actually got some snow flurries today so that was a pleasant surprise. I'll take some pictures of what I received this year (2 Zimmermann books - yeah!!!) when I get time and if I actually remember. Plus there were other gifts as well.

Here are the next two pairs of socks that will be knit next. Both pairs are from this year's Rockin' Sock Club. I had already started the Soltsice Slip socks some time ago but had to work on some other socks first. They are both also on the Top 10 Stash Projects KAL list. I am really looking forward to next year's sock club. Since I had already got in on Rockin' Sock Club 2008 before the KAL, than it doesn't count against the stash along. Plus it is sock yarn and we all know that sock yarn doesn't count anyway.

Socks from the Sock Sale at Fred Meyers in Hillsboro

Many socks were bought at the sock sale. The Chief had gotten up very early to hit the sales at Target and Lowes and the people in line were talking about the sock sale. The only ones here that didn't need any new socks were Nicholas and me. Nicholas and I had great fun at Craft Warehouse and Joanns. There were so many people at Joanns that lil Nicholas had to walk instead of riding in a cart. Then the line to check out went from the front of the store all the way to the back. It was crazy. But the little one was very good and stayed next to me the whole time.

PRGE III - From the land down under came the second package for the Punk Rock Gift Exchange. First there is the really large bag with the flag of Australia on it, some soft sparkle yarn that will be great in a scarf mixed with some other yarn that I have. There is a package of key chains with what looks like miniature copies of Australian money plus a package with 3 flowery candles. And lastly, the small ball with the pirate that glows. Nathan will love that since he has taken a liking to Pirates lately. Thank you Leeanne!!!

Knitters' Coffee Swap III - This fabulous package arrived from Tammy of Knit one, Insane 2 and came all the way from Canada. Check out all the yarn - 6 balls of Sirdar Luxury Soft Cotton and some of her hand-dyed yarn that is 100% Australian Merino. The yarn is sport weight and is in the "Chaos" colorway. I am sure that I can find something really nice to knit up with this yarn. Plus I get to try some Canadian coffee. Two bags from Cupper's Coffee & Tea which is Alberta's very own micro roaster and came with rave reviews from Tammy. Sadly, they only ship to Canada. The Lindor chocolates and the Smarties were quickly eaten, but I am taking my time with the chocolate covered coffee beans.

HSKS3 Swap - This owl post arrived today from Lissette of Gryffindor. There is the felted Ravenclaw bag and the cute Ravenclaw stitch markers. And of course there is the Chocolate Frog and bag of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. The yarn is very soft and I look forward to knitting up a pair of socks. I am not quite sure what type of sock yarn it is as there was no ball band on the yarn. But it really is soft. Thank you Lissette!!!

Hogwarts Sock Swap II - This owl post arrived yesterday from Matilda Edgecombe of Slytherin. I love the socks!!! They are incredibly soft and fit perfectly. I don’t think I have ever seen that sock yarn but should be fun to knit up with. I always like to work with new yarns. There is a beaded book mark sitting on top of the blue fabric thingy (not quite sure what it is but it’s pretty). Lastly, there is a tape measure (always handy), a sock pattern from Fiber Trends, and my favorite Pumpkin candies from Brach’s. That candy is one of the reasons I look forward to Halloween each year. One more thing, the one card that every Ravenclaw would love - that of Rowena Ravenclaw - the founder of Ravenclaw House.

These goodies arrived yesterday from my upstream SP 11 pal. The best part has got to be the two bags of Brachs Mellowcreme Pumpkins. Every year I wait patiently for Halloween to arrive so I can have as many pumpkins as I want. Check out the cute ball of roving that I get to play with. Hopefully I can get some practice on the drop spindle. Love the Sockotta sock yarn!!! It's my first ever Sockotta yarn. I even love the colors of the Lion Brand Boucle. Thank you to my SP 11 pal!!!

. Three pairs of socks on the needles. I must be crazy. The two socks above are being knitted with Socks that Rock Lightweight in "Firebird" and "In the Navy". The Firebird colorway is the June Sock Kit from the Rockin' Sock Club 2007 and is the "Solstice Slip" pattern. I am a tad behind in the club sock knitting. The other sock is for The Chief and will be a basic toe-up sock. The sock below is for my Hogwarts Sock Swap II Pal so there is really not much I can say about the sock right now. Obviously, it is being knitted in Slytherin colors. That is all I am willing to say at this time.

Not that I can think of right now.

I love sock yarn - especially hand-dyed sock yarn. Plus I love cotton and cotton blends. I have recently used Bernat Organic Cotton which is very soft. Mostly I use Sugar n' Cream and Peaches n' Cream. I would love to try the CotLin from Knit Picks.

10. Yarn/fiber you hate?

I don't really hate any yarn. All yarn is there for a reason. But I am not too fond of scratchy yarn.

Socks, dishcloths, a HP Ravenclaw scarf, the Clapotis (still)

Blues, greens, purple, black, red, pink, camouflage

13. Allergies?

I don't have any but The Chief is allergic to cats. Plus I don't care for cigarette smoke.

This lovely package came from Lauren of GreenT-Knits. Check out the package. There is not one, not two, not three, but four boxes of tea. And they are all ones I love. Plus there was two packages of scone mix. Very yummy!!! All the yarny goodness from 3 balls of Peaches n' Cream cotton, Patons, and Lion Brand Wool-Ease. The Halloween candy was the greatest. Here are some pictures from the Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival. We had gone on Saturday, the 22nd. The boys had great fun looking at the animals. I think that Nathan loved the alpaca best of all. When we first arrived, lil Nicholas went with daddy to go look at the animals while Nathan and I went to find the Blue Moon Fibers booth. We didn't stay long there as Nathan tried to help himself to someone's popcorn.

Here is the great package I received from my upstream Monkey pal. This lovely package traveled all the way across country from Rachel of Vermont. Oddly enough, Vermont is the only New England state that I had not been to when I was stationed up at NAS Brunswick (Maine). The one thing I remember about Maine was all the lobster. That is when Hurricane Isabel paid a vist to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and he got mad because we wouldn't let him play in the flooded parking lot. An early start to the rainy season? It seems like it was only yesterday when summer started. The one thing we did do this past week was place an order for some flower bulbs for the front yard. So I finally will have some Mt. Hood daffodils and the Chief will have some English Bluebells. Plus there will be other daffodils and tulips. Should all be very colorful when they bloom in the spring and in the upcoming years. Now if we can just figure out what to do in the backyard and on the shady side of the house.

1. Do you knit or crochet? How long have you been doing it?
Knit and crochet - I've been crocheting since the 80s and have been knitting for only a few years.

2. Have you made dishcloths before? Do you use them yourself, give them as gifts, or both?
Yes, I have. I have used them and given them as gifts.

3. What's your favorite cotton to make cloths from? What cotton would you like to try that you haven't before ?
I have used Sugar n' Cream, Peaches & Cream, Cottontots, and Bernat Organic Cotton. I would love to try Knit Picks CotLin.

4. If you knit, do you prefer circular or straight needles? For all, do you prefer wooden, metal, or plastic needles?
I mostly use straight needles unless I am knitting hats. Then I would use circulars. I mainly use metal but I do have 1 plastic size 7 needles. For dishcloths, I would use straight needles.

5. What are your favorite colors? Any colors you don't like much?
I don't think I have seen many dishcloth colors that I don't like. But I tend to use the variegated colors more than the solids. I do like all shades of blue, green, purple, red.

6. What do you like best about Autumn?
When I was living up in Maine, there was the changing colors of the leaves. It was a beautiful time of the year. This year I am looking forward to the fiber festivals and other crafty festivals here in Oregon.

7. Pies: Pumpkin? Apple? Pecan? All of em? or No Thanks!

I think I was the one who couldn't wait to get started.

Yes - Halloween is my favorite holiday. I still have my witchy hat from last year. Every year I look forward to the little pumpkin candies that come out for Halloween. And now I have two little boys to take out trick or treating.

10. If you had to choose just 3 edible 'goodies' to eat for a full year, what 3 would you choose?
Strawberries, chocolate, cheesecake

11. Do you have any pets? Kids? Husbands who seem like kids? ;)
No pets - 2 kids, both boys, 1 is 4 years old (will be 5 on Sept. 17th) and the other will be 2 on November 17th - and 1 husband

12. If you were to describe a particular yarn that shares traits of your personality, what would it be and why?
I think that I would be a superwash wool in a camouflage colorway - something soft but machine washable.

Halloween - I love everything about it from the decorations, the crisp scent of the air, and the children running around like goblins. I always watch all the Halloween movies. Then there was the one year when I went out around midnight with a friend and we had the bright idea to visit the local cemetary. I drove down from Virginia to Milton, Florida for a visit and we went out to Coon Hill Cemetary. I haven't been to a cemetary since then but I do watch Ghost Hunters.

15. Do you have any allergies or aversions your pal should know about?
No allergies. Don't care for cigarette smoke. I love handmade soap and lavender is my favorite scent.

More progess has been made on the "dream" socks. All that is left is the toe section and I can start on sock #2. The Jaywalker has a complete gusset and I will be starting on the leg this week. It may not seem like much but the boys have been driving me crazy all week long. Nicholas has discovered that he can turn off the power strip which the compter is plugged into. Amazingly, both the boys play well together when they are not tearing the cushions of the sofa.

The next dishcloth exchange will open up for registration on September 1st and close on September 8th at midnight EST. See you there!!!

I have only been knitting for the past few years but have crocheted since I was in high school back in the 80s. I spent 9 1/2 years in the US Navy with 5 years on an aircraft carrier. My two small boys are a handful. One is 4 years and the other is 21 months. Sometimes I miss living in Pueblo, Colorado. Bright neon colors make my eyes hurt. My all time favorite scent is lavender. My favorite NFL team is the San Diego Chargers and my favorite NASCAR driver is Jeff Burton. Plus I have all of the Harry Potter books and have been sorted into Ravenclaw.

Hand Dyed Yarn Swap

This lovely hand dyed sock yarn came from Corey of Fired Up Fairy Knits. It was for the first round of the Hand-Dyed Yarn Swap. I also received some Swedish Fish and Jujubees. The Swedish Fish got eaten very quickly by the Chief and I. The name of the yarn is "English Rose" and will make a great pair of socks to stand out from all my blue and green socks. Corey also has an Etsy store - Fired Up Fairy Knits. I am trying to be a good girl but that Tequila Sunrise is soooo very pretty.

Slow progress has been made on Jaywalker 2. I am still on the gusett part. But I did get some of the leg part done on the Dream Socks. I did most of that knitting at the Cat Bordhi event friday night here in Portland. I hope to get some more of the Jaywalker done this week and possibly some of the Clapotis worked on. I am about half way thru the straight section.

A cloudy day in Hillsboro

Last night I was able to go see Cat Bordhi at the World Forestry Center here in Portland. I took the MAX train instead of driving. Which is pretty good since there was very little parking. Apparently there was a concert going on at the zoo. There were sample socks from her new book "New Pathways for Sock Knitters". I am so glad that I was able to go.

Not only did I get Cat's autograph but I even won a skein of Socks that Rock Heavyweight in "Sherbert". It's very bright but I love it anyway. Honestly, I am not sure what I am gonna knit with it but I will figure out something. Also check out Cat's YouTube videos. She shows a variety of techniques including Judy's Magic Cast-on (which can be found in Cat's new book).

Happy Birthday!!!

Here they are - two of the three men that I live with. The other one was taking a nap at the time. But what can I say about the father of my children. We had meet on the USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75). Both of us just happened to be in the Combat Systems Department but we were in different divisions so we actually didn't see each other that often. But then one thing lead to another and then there was Nathan. A few years later, Nicholas arrived. And now, here we are in our first house and I can honestly say that I am very happy to have said "yes".

For the Jaywalker 2, I had to completely undue the first try as it was not striping like I wanted it to. The second attempt came out much better and I am now on the gusset part. The other sock is the first in the pair of "Priscilla's Dream Socks" from the Favorite Socks book. It is being knitted with Socks that Rock Silke in "Walking on the Wild Tide". I am all the way up to the foot part. The short row heel took me a tad longer but I liked how it came out. As soon as I get these socks done than I will start the "Solstice Slip" socks from the June kit of the Rockin' Sock Club 2007.

While the Blue Angels were flying overhead here in Hillsboro, I was at a meeting with the charter Oregon chapter for the Crochet Guild of America. The group is called "Always in Stitches" and meets once a month at the Joann's in Tigard. Yes, I crochet. And I have no problem saying that. I have been crocheting since I was in high school. I have only been knitting for the past few years. I also sew and hope one day to have time to work on spinning with my drop spindle. Anyway, I was very good and only came back with two small balls of Bernat Organic Natural Cotton - in Oasis and Desert Bloom. I did get two fat quarters to sew a small project bag. I'll take a picture when I finish the bag.

With the US Navy Blue Angels* flying overhead, the long wait has come to an end and my tea package has arrived all the way from Kentucky. This lovely package was put together by Kelly of Knitting Knurse. It was well worth the wait. Check out that very cute stuffed bunny. That went straight to little Nicholas as he still loves his stuffed animals. He has a giant stuffed Hello Kitty that he gives hugs and kisses. I absolutely love the yarn. And Kelly was kind enough to send 3 balls of baby alpaca and 2 balls of Regia sock yarn. There is the Celestial Seasonings tea - 1 Honey Vanilla Chamomile and 1 Peppermint, which I love. And of course chocolate is always good. I am gonna have to spend some time reading the book - The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques. Something that can come in very handy. But the cutest item has to be the Tea for One - a stoneware teapot and cup nested into one. Big hugs and thanks to Kelly!!!

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

Wool and wool blends are good. Anything natural. But I am not a yarn snob and also have used Caron and Bernat. There are some pretty nice and soft acrylic yarns out today. What I don't like is scratchy yarn or squeaky yarn.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have a container for the DPNs and the circulars are kept in the binder with the Knit Picks Options Set. My straight needles have no home.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I had learned how to knit back in 2005. I had to learn by myself from books and the internet as my mother only crochets. I think I am an intermediate knitter but I am not afraid to try new patterns.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Lavender

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
yes, I love Lemonheads and those little pumpkin candies that come out around Halloween

I also crochet (both yarn and thread), sew, do bead work, cross stitch, some plastic canvas work, and will soon be learning how to spin on a drop spindle.

I like all types of music (with the exception of rap). Yes, my computer and car stereo both play MP3s.

I like blues, greens, purple, pink, red, camouflage, black. The only colors I really don't like are bright neon colors as they hurt my eyes.

Right now socks are high on the list along with baby items. Small projects that don't take too much time are good.

That would be socks, dishcloths, and the never ending Clapotis.

I have used all of them. But mostly straight aluminum. For hats I have been using circular.

Yes, I have both.

That would be the crocheted afghan that I started back when I was still in the Navy. I just have to attach some of the flag squares and stars and then it would be done. But first I have to find the pieces.

Halloween

Anything with an Ancient Egypt theme or an Asian theme. I also like wizards and Pegasus.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I would say that my top 3 on my book list would be: Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off: The Yarn Harlot's Guide to the Land of Knitting, Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop, and Getting Started Knitting Socks (Getting Started series). I am pretty set on needles but a size 5 and size 6 16" circulars will probably come in handy. I am looking at getting them from Knit Picks. It seems that I always miss the Yarn Pirate updates on her etsy site. That and the updates on the Loopy Ewe. There is one colorway of the Duet Socks Yarn that I would love and that is "Sailor Girl" - only because I used to be in the Navy. Currently I subscribe to Interweave Knits and Creative Knitting.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

Fair Isle, Intarsia and I someday want to knit my first sweater.

The Dog Days of Summer

Today was a good mail day. My package from the "Dog Days of Summer" swap arrived. This great package came from Paula of Basset Knitter. Even little Nicholas received something in the form of an adorable bib. He gets a tad messy at meal times. And I loved how she totally got my love for lavender. There is the lavender soap, candle, and dried lavender flowers from her own garden. I have every intention of planting a lavender bush in the back yard. I love the yarn she picked out for me. It's Louet Sales 100% Wet Spun long linen. The color is Pink Panther. I have always wanted to try to knit with linen yarn. The doggie measuring tape will come in handy and of course chocolate is always good. So a big thank you to Paula.

Two socks and a mouse...

Today's Sock-it-to-me Sunday was slightly delayed due to the arrival of a new visitor who I saw in the garage. I had never before seen a mouse until now and I screamed like a little girl. And then later on in the evening, I saw the effing mouse in the pantry and found out how he was getting in. So that entrance will be sealed tomorrow. But on the socks, I am almost finished with the leg portion of Jaywalker 2 and have started a pair of "Priscilla's Dream Socks" from the Favorite Socks book with Socks that Rock Silke in "Walking on the Wild Tide" from the Rockin' Sock Club 2007 April kit. The pattern that came with the kit just wasn't working for me but I love the yarn.

Edit: I was actually born in San Diego and my father was in the Army. When my parents split, mom moved us to Pueblo, Colorado which I still consider home. I graduated from Pueblo Central in 1988. That explains why I have the Pueblo Chieftain and KOAA linked in the sidebar. I actually met Mike Daniels back in 1989 and still have an autographed picture of him and two short letters from him.

Knit 1 Tea 2

1. Do you like loose tea or bags, or both – something you want to try?

I normally use bags but I have used loose tea as well.

2. What is your favorite kind of tea (Brand, flavor, variety, etc)?

Celestial Seasonings, Tazo, and Republic of Tea. My favorite is Chamomile.

3. Favorite color in regards to tea or one you would like to try? (black, green, red, and white) (keeping in mind that this is how this swap is set up).

I prefer green tea or white tea. I did try some black tea once and I got a tad nauseous. So I had to throw it out.

4. Would you say you were a tea pot kind of person or just a hot water heater kind?

Currently a hot water heater kind as I don't have a tea pot.

5. What tea accessories would you like but have never purchases for yourself?
The only tea accessory that I currently have is a tea strainer. So any type of accessory would be great.

6.How do you prefer to be pampered? (examples: mani/pedi, bubble bath, yummy treat, etc). Right now I would settle for some peace and quiet from two small boys. Other than that, a massage is always good. I had one when I was about 8 months pregnant with Nicholas and my back muscles were relaxed for days afterward. But I wouldn't turn down a manicure and a pedicure.

7. If you were a kind of yarn what would you be and why? Superwash wool - Soft, warm, and machine washable. Preferably in the camouflage colorway.

8. If you had to knit/crochet baby booties, a fun fur scarf, or a fair isle sweater, which would you choose and why? I would probably crochet baby booties with some size 10 crochet thread and trim them with beads and ribbon. They look really cute and heirloomy.

9. What other event would make you skip a tea party? (A garden party? A book club meeting? A yoga class? Opening night for a new action thriller? etc?)

I would have to skip the tea party for a chance to meet Jeff Burton (driver of the 31 car). I don't know what it is about him but I just drool every time I hear him talk.

10. What treat would you consider essential at your tea party? (Sweet? Salty? Scones? Those petite pastry trays with a couple of all sorts of things? Little crust less sandwiches?)
I think that I would like scones, cute lil Petits Fours, crustless sandwiches. Really anything yummy would be fine.

11. When buying yarn for a project how do you choose - do you buy the one called for or do you substitute?
It depends on the cost of the yarn. But if I really want to try the yarn then I will find a way to get it. But I have no problem picking a substitute yarn.

12. What do you carry your knitting/crocheting in when on the go?
I have a few small project bags that I have received from other swaps.

13. Favorite movie to watch while knitting/crocheting?

Tomb Raider (both of them)

14. Are you a traditional tea cup kind of person or a mug type of person? Do you care if they match?

So far all I have used are mugs and they don't need to match.

15. Favorite childhood birthday party?
Actually, I don't remember many of my childhood birthday parties. But my mom used to bakes all of our cakes herself and one year she made me a cake with Strawberry Shortcake on it.

16. Favorite type of scone and jam?
I like cinnamon scones and my favorite jam is strawberry.

17. If you use candles, what is your favorite scent? Lavender

18. If you could choose 3 people to have 'tea' with, who would they be and why? (famous or not, living or dead).
1- My Great Aunt Joan of Arc, she passed on earlier this year and was always fun to be around. She liked to call herself just one of the girls.

2- My Nana (my mother's mom), my mom was heartbroken when she passed on. She didn't speak a word of english so I would have to learn Spanish to talk to her.

3- My mother, she managed to raise three children on her own and never complained. My folks split when I was 11 years old.

19. You've been invited to a tea party, what 'props' will you wear (formal or casual)? I am more of a casual girl but I would wear a simple summer dress with a large floppy hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

20. Any allergies/preferences you have or are willing to admit to?
I don't have any allergies but the hubby is allergic to cats. Plus I do not like cigarette smoke.

21. Anything we missed that you want your pal to know? I love ancient Egypt and I still play games on my Playstation 2. The Tomb Raider games are my favorites. I spent 9 1/2 years in the US Navy with 5 years on an aircraft carrier (the USS Harry S Truman).

In case anyone noticed, there was no Saturday Sky or Sock-it-to-me Sunday this past weekend. I do have a very good reason for not doing either. You see this past weekend was the Washington County Fair and we had planned on going for quite awhile. That of course is not the reason. Sadly we were not able to go to the fair. The reason is that lil Nicholas had a fever all weekend long and spent most of his time sleeping or crying. He was a very sad little boy. And that is why there were no posts this past weekend. Today he is doing much better. So here are some pictures from this past weekend.
